We would like to highlight the importance of supporting blood donation in the workplace and raising awareness of employee rights and employer responsibilities in Bulgaria.
Eligibility and Donor Rights
In Bulgaria, blood donation is a legally recognized public benefit activity. Donation is a humane and voluntary act of charity and human solidarity, in which blood or blood components are taken free of charge from the donor.
Blood donors are individuals aged between 18 -and 65 who do not have any medical contraindications. The minimum interval between two standard blood donations is 60 days.
A donor has the right to receive information about his health status, established during the examination, and about the results of the laboratory tests performed.
A donor has the right to receive strengthening and tonic food for the blood donor in the amount of 4.09 euros, reimbursement of the direct costs of the blood donor in the amount of up to 2.56 euros, symbolic gifts to blood donors in the amount of up to 3.07 euros.
Employer and Payroll Implications
Under Bulgarian law, employers are required to release employees during blood donation activities, including:
– for the day of the examination and blood donation;
– one additional day following the donation for recovery.
The payment conditions are not strictly mandated and depend on the employer’s internal policies and practice.
Many socially responsible companies treat these days as fully paid working days.
Employees are required to provide the employer with a certificate from the transfusion hematology center as the reason for the leave.
Eurofast’s Take
Supporting blood donation is both a socially responsible and employee-centric initiative. To ensure compliance, Eurofast helps ensure a clear understanding of legal obligations, practical implementation of payroll payments and alignment with companies’ corporate values. By formalizing policies, effectively tracking leave and recognizing donors’ contributions, companies are strengthening their commitment to socially relevant topics while fostering a positive workplace culture.
