Georgia is one of the few countries that has established itself as a “Covid-safe” country and the country’s government is doing everything it can in order not to lose this status.
However, today’s reality is such that we all must continue to live with the conditions of the coronavirus pandemic and therefore many countries have already opened their borders.
Georgia is also starting to implement the country’s reopening plan and one part of it is a new visa program targeting self-employed remote workers. According to the plan, the government allows citizens of any country falling under this category to cross the border and reside in the country for at least 6 months.
The Economy Minister of Georgia, Natia Turnava, announced that the new plan has already began and encourages international citizens to work from Georgia remotely. The project is focused on freelancers and self-employed foreigners. The minister also noted that an online platform for applications has already been developed.
To enter the country for a long-term period, a citizen of a foreign country will have to fill out a mandatory application form and obtain the preliminary confirmation required for border crossing. While filling out the form, individuals should provide personal information, a certificate of employment and a letter providing their consent to undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine.
So called long-term visitors will have to go into 14-day quarantine at their own expense. In addition, they will need to obtain travel insurance valid for six months.
This is indeed a strong move by the Georgian government to attract the IT sector and freelancers to the country.
